Okay, I have a question. A big one.

I'm white, and I want very much to be able to get out of that box and start to understand everyone else. I'm also unfortunately kind of shy, so I don't know where to go, what to ask, who to talk to. I want to listen, and I don't know where to start.

Can someone help me out?

I'm in a similar position. I just finished reading an interesting book called "Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?" by Beverley Tatum, which I recommend as a starting point. It's got some resources in the back that I'll be looking into next. The title is a question I've always sort of wondered, and her answer sounds pretty good to me, although the book addresses a lot more than that. (The subtitle is "A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity".) I don't agree with everything she says (I'm still coming to terms with the use of the word "ableism" in a serious context), but it was really interesting and it's still on my wish list after finishing my library copy 'cause I think I'd like to work through it again / be able to refer to it when discussing race with other people.
